This year (2025) marks the third year of this event, which honors local legend Jeff Scuffins. Additionally, it will be the first year that we are adding a four-person relay to the race schedule.
Jeff Scuffins (Scuff) was a well-established track and cross-country standout who graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1980. He was a Maryland state track champion and still holds school records for the 1,600 meters (4:18.94) and 3,200 meters (9:25).
While attending Hagerstown Junior College, now known as Hagerstown Community College (HJC/HCC), Jeff earned two Junior College National Championship titles, including setting a meet record of 13:53.0 in the indoor three-mile during his first title in 1981. Scuffins still holds HJC’s/HCC’s school records for the 5,000 meters (14:24) and 10,000 meters (29:45.8). He was inducted into the HJC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.
Jeff later competed for Clemson University, where he graduated in 1985 as an All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer in cross-country and the 10,000 meters on the track. His post-graduate running career is well-documented, with his most notable performance being his record-setting win at the 1987 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. His course-record time of 2:14:01 still stands.
This event will take place in the historic northern portions of Hagerstown, MD, starting and finishing near Oswald Park at 211 Prospect Ave. Participants will race on a certified 5K (3.1-mile) loop, requiring them to complete two laps.
