The Mohegan Tribe invites everyone to join us in celebrating one of the region’s most treasured cultural traditions at this year’s Wigwam Festival held August 16 and 17 on the Mohegan Reservation at Fort Shantok.

Each year, the Mohegan Tribe celebrates its culture with Native American dancers, artisans, and families from across the country travel to participate in this family-friendly celebration of culture, heritage, and community. The two-day event features traditional Native American crafts, foods, and dance competitions, all set in a historic and welcoming outdoor setting.

The festival held at Fort Shantok, held rain or shine, is free and open to the public.

Storytelling by Mohegan oral traditionalists

Grand Entry: At Noon each day, Mohegan Tribal leaders will welcome all our Native guests to join us during Grand Entry, where participants including dancers, drummers, singers and honored guests enter the tent in a procession. This is a ceremonial event, and we ask that no photos or videos be taken during this time.

Dancing: Throughout the two days, enjoy dance competitions featuring a variety of styles including but not limited to Eastern Blanket, Eastern War, Northern Traditional, Southern Straight, Fancy, Grass, Jingle and more.

Drumming and Singing: Five drum groups including Ottertrail, Southern Eagle, Rez Dogs, Yootay Singers and our own Shantok Nation.

Food: Nearly a dozen food vendors will be on hand selling everything from traditional Native American favorites to breakfast sandwiches and more.

Native Crafts and Goods: Over 40 Native artisans will be selling various crafts, jewelry and other handmade goods.

Regalia: Many Natives, including those taking part in Grand Entry, will be wearing traditional regalia. This is not a costume and cannot be touched without permission. Regalia can include intricate beadwork and hold cultural significance.
