In May this year, the Nebraska chapter of the American String Teachers Association is once again sponsoring the Young Orchestra Festival, for orchestras grades 6-9!
For my freshman orchestra, this festival is a great non-threatening introduction into performing in a music contest. The clinicians are friendly, encouraging, and inspiring. My students leave the festival with a renewed sense of pride in their ensemble. After the festival, we listen to our performance with judge’s comments and the students get to hear how much their work throughout the year has improved their skill. It is a nice way to reflect on musical growth and celebrate their achievement. My students who elect to perform solos always come away with a boost of confidence and renewed self-efficacy.
